Bunting Kit Review and a Crafty Project with The Stitchery

March 26, 2016

As some of my blog readers may know, I love crafts! Whether it’s working on a project for me or doing something crafty and creative with the kids, I often find myself losing track of time and getting carried away with the crafts! Quite often when the kids have given up, I’m still going!

When I was contacted by The Stitchery and asked if I’d like to work with them I was super excited. I chose to review one of their super cute bunting kits, but they also sent me some fabric so that I could make a pretty garden party table cloth.

The Stitchery recently launched an online shop and based in the town of Lewes, East Sussex. They’re an established business celebrating their 8th birthday this year! The Stitchery has everything you need for all of your haberdashery, fabric and knitting needs, plus a whole range of gift ideas, homewares and bits and bobs!

Bunting Kits

The Stitchery have a total of six bunting kits, all available or £14.95. I chose the yellow/turqiouse kit as I loved the bright colours and I thought that the bird print fabric was pretty cute and summery!

I’ve never made bunting before, so I wasn’t exactly 100% sure what I needed to do, but thankfully The Stitchery have a ‘how-to’ guide on their website which was really easy to use.

Included in the bunting kit is a selection of three co-ordinated fabrics, binding for the top bunting edge, handy templates and thread to either machine or hand sew. Overall there is enough material included to make 7m of bright, beautiful bunting.

The first thing I needed to do was to cut the shapes of the flags. As mentioned above there are two templates includes. A small flag shape and a large flag shape.

Once I’d cut the shapes out I pinned them onto the bunting ready for me to sew them on. I decided to use the yellow fabric for the larger flag and the two blue fabrics for the smaller flags. I thought the yellow fabric would work well to break the other fabrics up.

It was actually really easy to make this bunting and I think it looks lovely in our twin bedroom. As soon as they saw it they claimed it as their own and asked me to hang it on their wall above their beds!

Garden Party Table Cloth

I’ve never made a table cloth before, but I have made quilts before so I didn’t think this project would be much different to that.

The Stitchery sent me two fabrics for the top of the table cloth, yellow gingham and pink gingham, along with a subtle shade of yellow for the backing fabric.

The fabric is really great quality and I would have no hesitations in buying from The Stitchery in the future. Available at £3.99 per metre, this lightweight, yet robust fabric is perfect for a table cloth!

The first thing I did was cut the two gingham fabrics into strips of the same length and width. I then pinned them together so that I had an equal mixture of squares made up of three strips. Some of them had two pink strips with yellow in the middle, and others had two yellow strips with pink in the middle. This way when you sew them all together they’ll alternate.

After I’d sewn all of the strips together I pinned the backing fabric on and placed it face down onto the face up top part of the table cloth – so that both of the correct sides were facing inward toward one another. By sewing the edges this way, you can hide the edges, just make sure you leave a gap of around two to three inches so that you can then put the table cloth the right way before closing it up.

Considering this is the first time that I’ve made a table cloth, I think I did pretty well! What do you think?

For the purpose of this review I was sent the items above free of charge. All views and opinions are 100% my own.

I started a sewing course a couple of years ago and they showed us how to make bunting. Yours looks brilliant and your table cloth has come out well too. I'm still hopeless at sewing!

I love these! I'm mainly a cross stitch girl but I have made bunting before. I've never attempted anything as big as a tablecloth before though. Yours looks fab – even more so to say it's your first attempt!

I made bunting for our wedding 4 years ago – metres and metres and metres of it – it took weeks! Yours looks lovely.
Thanks for sharing your review on #TriedTested this week x
