A family fun day out at Greenmeadow Community Farm
Back in April of this year I wrote a post called, ‘Seven farms in and around Cardiff that you must visit‘. Included in this post was Greenmeadow Community Farm.
I’ve wanted to take our girls there for so long and I finally got the chance yesterday. Greenmeadow Community Farm has been a working farm for over 250 years and in the late 1980s it was saved by a group of local people who wanted to stop the farm being turned into a development site. Thank goodness they took this action as Greenmeadow Community Farm is a seriously impressive farm!
Opening at 10am, 7 days a week, Greenmeadow is a great place to keep the kids busy during the summer holidays! We set off from our home in Cardiff at 9.30am. We arrived bang on 10am. It was easy to find and as we were super early we easily found a space to park! Should you arrive later and find that the car park is full, there is an overflow carpark.
After parking the car we headed toward the entrance. I wasn’t 100% sure that I was going the right way, but it turned out we were! Simply head toward the brick building pictured below and follow the path!
Entrance cost us £4.85 each for the girls and £5.95 for me. I was impressed to see that admission price included the tractor/trailer ride.
We also bought some animal feed so that we could feed the goats and ducks!
I was really surprised by how big the farm is. It’s big, but easily accessible for all and our girls didn’t moan once about having to walk which is great! I think because there is so much to see and because everything is pretty close together there was lots to keep them occupied as walked around.
Between 10.30 and 12.30 children can cuddle some rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens in the marque. The rabbits were babies so they were quite lively, but super cute!
We then headed down towards the animal barn and on doing so we walked past a mummy pig with lots of piglets!
R asked some interesting questions about the pig. Such as, “What’s that under her?” She was referring to her udder and was surprised to learn that pigs produce milk as well as cows!
The girls enjoyed playing on Trefor the tractor next!
I have to be honest and admit that when I bought the animal feed I did so because I wanted to feed the animals! M took this picture of me feeding a goat!
Located in this area is a small lake which is one of three areas for children to play in.
After having a play in the park we walked towards the Dell which is a forest area. On the way there we walked past a beautiful dear and some ponies.
One thing I noticed is that there are lots of places around the farm for families to have picnics and this sheltered area (pictured below) was another one of those areas.
They also enjoyed sticking their hands in the holes to see if they could guess what was inside!
We walked passed some pretty big and pretty noisy pigs too!
The girls enjoyed exploring the various areas and things available to them here.
We fed some of the birds and had another play on Trefor the Tractor before having our picnic.
At 12pm the tractor rides started. I should have probably headed over around 11.45 as when we arrived at 11.55, the tractor was full and had just started to depart!
It didn’t matter though. It just meant we needed to wait another 10 minutes for it to return, which actually turned out to be a good thing as we ended up at the front of the queue so we were able to sit right at the front much to the girls delight!
The tractor ride was 10 minutes long and took us through the tunnel pictured below and passed the adventure playground, more on that further down! We saw pigs, sheep and other animals on the tractor ride and got to listen to the tractor driver talking about the various things that happen on the farm.
After the tractor ride we went to the adventure playground. It’s a pretty big play area that the girls enjoyed playing in.
There were swings, slides and lots areas for them to climb and explore!
We then walked through the animal barn and fed the goats. We saw some cute baby goats along with some cows.
We spent around four and a half hours at the farm. I think we could have easily stayed longer! There is a cafe at the farm, but we didn’t use these facilities.
Overall, we had a fantastic time and we can’t wait to return again!

Great post, we actually went a few weeks ago but didn't see the half of it as S needed a feed and W was over-tired!
So we need to go back!

This looks great. We have a similar farm park near us in north Wales and they're such good value for the amount of time you can spend there and the variety of activities they have.

Wow, this place looks great, and so well thought out with all the different play areas. We went to a farm recently too and I have to say I think I enjoyed feeding the goats etc more than the kids, it's great. And how cute is that bunny with his tongue sticking out!

This place looks the business! Any farm that can keep young girls entertained for hours is a winner in my eyes! We have a few farms like this in Ireland which we've been to but not in a god while so reading this has prompted me to bring my girls again before school starts so thank you for that 🙂 Cheers, Ross #binkylinky
