When it comes to cutting your bills, there are many options you can choose. With the cost of living crisis not showing any signs of stopping anytime soon; experts predict it could be 2027 before real wages and living costs catch up to 2021 levels, although it might ease somewhat in 2024. Being able to save as much money as possible without compromising too much or going without is getting trickier.

So, what exactly are your options when it comes to saving money on household bills?

If You Don’t Use It, Lose It

Firstly, you must look at what you are and aren’t using. Do you have 5 streaming subscriptions but only use 2 on a frequent basis? Then you need to ask yourself if you really need the others. The beauty of streaming subscriptions is that you can cancel them at any time and switch between different services as you wish, month to month. If you do have limited funds, then you can flit between services on a monthly basis, depending on what you want to watch. You can apply this to other areas, too, be it the gym, an annual membership you’re getting much use for or anything else.

Branded Isn’t Always Better

We’ve all seen the blind taste test adverts promoting own brand foods for supermarkets to demonstrate their quality compared to the more, usually expensive household brands. The reality is that these days, supermarket brands or budget ranges can be just as good if not better than top-quality brands. What you choose to swap will depend on your taste and the product in question; some really aren’t worth swapping, but making a few small swaps can help you save a few pounds on your shopping bill.

Another good idea for non-food purchases you need to make is to look for auction sites selling items at low cost, trade retailers that sell pallets of returns (although you need to be able to take the hit if something doesn’t work), or find online retailers that sell discount goods for less than RRP.

Find Free Alternatives

They say nothing is really free these days; however, there are many free alternatives to many services or packages you use, so that’s not always strictly true. Take your streaming service, for example; there are free alternatives to paying a monthly subscription or options that can give you limited free or low-cost access. Or maybe you are already using these services and need to find soap2day alternatives to help you avoid paying to watch your favourite shows or movies. Again, if you’re not using your gym membership, for example, you can head to YouTube to find exercise videos you can use at home instead of paying for classes.

Do some research and find out what free or low-cost alternatives are available for what you need or are already paying for. If it’s not TV shows and movies you want but podcasts and you don’t want to pay, you can download the Google podcast app and listen to your favourite shows with ads to avoid paying a subscription to other providers for ad-free content.

Cutting down on your expenses and bills doesn’t always mean you need to go without. You just need to find a lower cost of free alternatives and make some compromises so you still get what you enjoy but without the expense that can go with it.
