Back to nursery after the weekend: Day Four

September 14, 2015

Click here to read my last update.

The weekend break from nursery has done R and M the world of good.

M is now over her cold and the past two days have given us a chance to talk about nursery and everything that the girls enjoy about it.

R was very excited about going to nursery this morning and kept asking if it was time to go yet! M, on the other hand said that she didn’t want to go and we did have a few tears, but I remained calm and talked her through it.

I cuddled her a lot and carried her from the car to nursery school so that she felt secure.

Last night I had a really good conversation with R about nursery. She loved talking about it and kept asking what else we could talk about to do with nursery.

We talked about the teachers, about the pegs they hang their coats on, about the toys inside and outside that they can play with, about the other children and also about the toilets and how they’re just the right size for her!

A few ‘distraction’ techniques I’ve used over the weekend and today include:

  • Telling the girls that they get to put their snack money into the Tigger money box
  • Telling M that she can give her pinafore back to her teacher (M was sick on hers last week, so wore a pinafore from the school home)
  • Telling them both that they get to see their new friend at nursery as it was their friends first day today
All of these seemed to help.
I left our house 15 minutes before school was due to start so that I could get a parking space close to the school and so that we didn’t have to rush in.
When we got there I held M until the teacher opened the doors and then we went in and hung their coats and bags up on their pegs.
They gave their teacher the Pinafore back and put their money in Tigger. I gave them both a kiss and cuddle and left. M was a bit teary, but her favourite teacher held her and she seemed ok.
They both stayed for the whole session which is brilliant and they both came out smiling and telling me all about what they’d done at nursery.
It’s so emotional hearing them talk about nursery. It feels really strange being at home without them. I can’t get over how quickly they’re growing up. I know it’s cliched, but it really does feel like only yesterday that they were babies!
They’ve had their first piece of ‘homework’ from school which is to decorate a cardboard square to go up on the display board which will be about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I’m thinking of using dry porridge in some way to decorate them as the bears like to eat porridge for breakfast! We’ll see!
I took the girls to the hairdressers after lunch. M had her hair cute, but R said she’d have hers done next week! We spent the rest of the day building a den!
Here’s hoping that tomorrow will go as smoothly as today did!

Oh I love the den. I know it must be hard for little ones if they don't feel secure going to nursery but it sounds like you have done a fantastic job in making them feel safe
