Brilliant Mum Feature Week 42

January 25, 2018

Hello and welcome to the Brilliant Mum Feature. Once a week I will be featuring one mum in a bid to find out more about them and their lives.

If you’d like to take part in this series, simply fill in this form.

Brilliant Mum Feature

This week our brilliant mum feature is Vicky. Vicky blogs at The Growing Mum.

Vicky lives in Dorset with her husband and one child (plus another on the way). Vicky works in IT four days a week and tries to spend the non-working day doing an activity with her son and maybe making a nice meal for date night later in the evening. Vicky says; “This will probably sound quite lame, but in my spare time, I love watching comedy shows to make me giggle after a long day. It allows me to crochet at the same time too so I’m currently working on a baby blanket as a present for a friend.”

Thanks for taking part Vicky!

Have you always wanted to be a mum?

I grew up as an only child (not by choice) so I’ve always wanted to have lots of children. In a way it might have been to fulfil the dream my parents never got to do. I started with 10 in my head (oh the naivety) but I can now understand why some people stop at 1. I would still love to have a large-ish family and adoption and/or fostering is a cause quite close to my heart.

How did you feel when your children were born?

I was very overwhelmed with emotion as I held my baby immediately after birth. I don’t even think to ask the gender until prompted by the midwife. He latched on instantly and somehow it felt like the most natural thing in the world. I was completely besotted. The birth wasn’t so heartwarming. It was very quick so I hoped to leave within a few hours, but it turns out quick is not always good for the female body so had to stay in for a while.

What have been your most rewarding experiences so far as a mum?

Gosh this is a tough one. I’m afraid it’s poo-related. As a baby, my son would go for up to 8 days without a bowel movement and would be visibly in pain for a few days before he finally went. Nighttimes were worse as he couldn’t sleep due to the pain. No one could help as apparently breastmilk is supposed to be a laxative so it was “normal”. Anyways, leg cycling helped a bit so I had his nappy open under him during the movements then I replaced it with a potty. Now he asks for the potty for poos, even at nursery. It’s just amazing how the little actions we do can quickly become a routine for them.

What are some of your funniest moments to have happened to you as a mum?

Where do I start? I climbed into the cot with my baby as he wouldn’t settle and my back was killing from bending to stroke his head.

During the distracted whilst feeding phase, I sprayed a friend’s sofa with breastmilk as he unlatched in the middle of letdown to look around.

When he does a massive poo in the potty I say “oh wow” so now he repeats it too while looking at his potty which confuses anyone else looking after him.

Grandma tickled him a lot on one of the days she had him. That night he woke at 3am and we brought him into bed. After he calmed down from crying, he started saying “ickle ickle ickle” for tickle. We were so tired but managed to smile at it for the first few seconds

Have there been any situations with your children that you have found difficult to cope with?

We had 13 months of him not sleeping longer than 2 to 3 hours. I was so exhausted and nothing we tried helped. And yes we tried most things. I dreaded every nighttime but somehow found some energy to make it through the day. I was at my wits end but thankfully it just seemed to click one night.

What are your dreams and hopes for your children?

I hope they are brave enough to try new things. I feel I’ve held myself back through fear of failure and I regret not pursuing certain dreams so I don’t want them to have many of those regrets.
