I completed my first ever 10k! St Davids Day Run 2017!
I remember writing a post back in 2016 after completing the 5k mo run. Before that 5k, I’d taken part in a few 5k’s before, but I’d never taken them seriously. I’d usually walk a bit, then run a bit, then walk a bit, but I knew that I wanted to up my running! That’s why I took part in the 5k mo run.
It was a great experience and I really enjoyed it. As such, when one of my friends suggested that I join her in completing the St Davids Day 10k run, I happily signed up whilst thinking to myself that I had plenty of time to train!
Roll on a few months and the 10k came around pretty quickly and, you guessed it, I hadn’t trained once! Well, the mo run in November 2016 was the last time I’d run. As the weather got colder I hung up my running boots and strapped on my ‘spinning boots’! So it’s not as if I haven’t been doing any exercise, because I have been doing spin class twice a week ever since.
Anyway, the day of the 10k came around and I was feeling quite optimistic. Nervous, but optimistic! I knew I’d be able to get to 5k ok so I just told myself to take it easy for the first few kilometres, pace myself, go slow, enjoy it and if I ended up walk/running the last 5k then that was ok.

All started well as I watched my friend disappear into the distance! 50 minutes later my friend rang me and said she’d finished. I was just approaching the 8km mark so I wasn’t far behind!
Although my time wasn’t the fastest in the world at 76 minutes, I was pretty pleased and impressed with myself for actually completing the 10k! So much so, that I’ve signed up for the Race for Life 10k in July. You can view my sponsorship page here if you’d like to donate as I’ll be running in memory of my mum who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2005.

With my first 10k under my belt, I’ll be getting my running shoes out of retirement, actually, I think I could do with a new pair to be honest, and I’ll definitely be training this time around. That’s after the pain, ashiness and soreness from last weekends 10k goes away! Wish me luck!

Great achievement, I have always wanted to be a runner..but I’m too lax! After I have this baby and my hips are better I’m getting more active. You should be so proud. X

I love running and was regularly doing 10k as part of my exercise routine. I’ve dropped down a bit recently because of the demands of looking after the kids but I’d love to do a 10k race one day. I’ve never been a particularly good runner until last summer it just clicked into place and I found myself hitting long distances. The sense of achievement is amazing and I also find running is great for your mental health. Good work! #thatfridaylinky

AMAZING! Well done you. I keep threatening to do a 10k but considering I can’t run more than 3k at a time, it’s not looking likely. I really need to pull my finger out and just get training. 76 mins is brilliant. I know I’d probably do it in about 3 hours and walk most of the way! #thatfridaylinky

AMAZING!!! Go you!!! That’s such an achievement. I did a 5k once and I honestly thought I was going to die, so the thought of a 10k is impossible! I would love to enjoy running but I find it very painful due to various conditions, so many of my friends have the running bug though! #thatfridaylinky

Well done, that’s brilliant! Good luck for the Race for Life, it’s hard to believe that I did that myself in 2015. I did it for my mum too, who I lost in 2008. x #thatfridaylinky

I’m so sorry to read about your Mum. Huge congrats on completing the 10k. Your picture popped up on Instagram on the morning of the race, and I was wondering how you got on! (Probably should have looked sooner!) I did a 5k run 10 weeks after having a C section. It nearly killed me! Huge congrats to you on your run x #thatfridaylinky

Oh wow well done you! I started the couch to 5K last year at the grand old age of 48! I have never run in my life before but it gets quite addictive doesn’t it. You sound like you are doing really well and I’m glad you are enjoying it. #thatfridaylinky
