Essential Summer Duds for Dads

May 2, 2016

Summer is around the corner and that means it’s time for some new clothes to ring in the season. Sometimes, outfitting fathers for the warm weather months is easier said than done. For many dads, trying to follow the latest fashion trends often spells disaster. Here are a few rules and trends to stick to so you can look your best during the summer without unnecessarily embarrassing your family.

When you’re a grown-man with a family, you should be well beyond trying to attract attention with your clothes. When it comes to dads and fashion, less is more and your goal should be to blend in and simply look like a man that has his business together. However, that doesn’t mean it has to be all solid colours and no fun. One of the best ways to spice up an outfit is with some sharp patterns, and no design is more on trend right now than plaid. The terrific-looking tartan is an essential item that this blog called a “wardrobe staple” and has been a must-have since its Scottish origins way back in the 1500s. One of the most popular styles is the classic checkered buffalo plaid, and the pattern goes well with any combination of colors and clothes.

Another way you can always look good while staying comfortable is with the down-played, button-down sport shirt. A good button-down is versatile, classic and can be worn to either the office or more formal affairs. It’s also perfectly appropriate for a day at the beach with the family. Grab a button-down sport shirt with the aforementioned plaid pattern and you’ll be ready for anything the season might throw at you.

Much like the sport shirt in terms of class and versatility is the always reliable polo. Adding a collar to an outfit can be that little extra touch you need to make it that much more appropriate to wear in public. A polo is casual enough to be worn for yardwork or loafing around the house, but it also looks nice enough to be taken out on the town or worn to work. The polo shirt is another great way to add some colour to your ensemble without looking as though you’re trying too hard. In the summer you’re going to want cooler colours and few things look better than bright blues, greens, and turquoises like those in the collection at this site. They’ll help add a little extra something to your summer ensemble.

But perhaps the trend that has men most excited for summer is that sandals are actually being considered high fashion. It’s an obvious choice for the summer months, but major designers have declared that a proper pair of leather sandals are the footwear du jour for fashionable men in 2016. Many models have actually been seen sporting socks with sandals on the runway, though this isn’t suggested for the average man. While this doesn’t apply for your old pair of Tevas, you’d probably do well to find a comfortable pair of Birkenstocks for your next beach adventure or even a shopping trip with the missus.

By sticking to these tips and tricks, you’ll be on the cutting edge of the style of what this article has dubbed “daddy cool.” Honestly, what dad doesn’t want the rest of their family to think of them as a style stud?

I mentioned tartan to area T and his face was a picture! I think he'll be giving that particular trend a miss!
