Flexible Business Ideas for Busy Parents

August 28, 2020

Running a business is never an easy feat, and it can be especially tricky if you’re a parent. You don’t have a lot of time, and your children have to come first. But starting a small business can often be a benefit to parents too, allowing you to be more flexible with your time and decide when you want to work. It makes it possible to work while the kids are at school, and then maybe take a break and do another couple of hours once they’re in bed if you need to. Here are some ideas for a flexible business that you could use.

Online Selling

Selling things online isn’t a magic moneymaker, but you can be successful if you can carve out a niche for yourself. Find something that you think you can sell well, whether it’s something you buy wholesale and sell or something you make or manufacture yourself. You need to have a point of difference, whether it’s selling things that are cheaper, better quality, or solve problems in a new way. If you want to sell online, you need to be prepared to market your products well. But if you find a little success, it can be a great side income.

Delivery/Courier/Moving Business

Do you have a van or even a large car? Even if you don’t, buying one could be a good investment for a new business. People always need things moved from A to B, whether it’s packages, furniture, or even pets. By starting a delivery, courier, or moving service, you could make some extra money and control your hours. Make sure to take out van insurance, here, and protect your vehicle. It’s essential to have the right insurance for your business and keep your van on the road. Think of something that might make you stand out from other businesses, such as offering a pet taxi service.

Pet Sitting or Dog Walking

If you’re someone who likes animals and has experience with them, pet sitting, and dog walking can be excellent to offer as a flexible business. There are various services that you could offer, including in-home visits for pets, pet sitting in your home, and dog walking and training. If you don’t have much experience, you might practice with friends and family. You can also find some courses that will help you to set up your business and build the right skills.

Virtual/Digital Skills

Working from a computer is ideal for some parents. You don’t need to go anywhere, but you can also work from pretty much anywhere, if necessary. There are lots of different virtual and digital skills that you can offer to clients. You could be a freelance writer, a social media manager, a web developer, a graphic designer, and much more. You control how much work you pick up, so you can decide when you want to take on clients.

Being a busy parent doesn’t have to stop you from running a business. There are flexible options that might suit you.
