How To Encourage The Maturity Of Your Children

January 19, 2022

Although it is important to let your child live their best childhood life, it is useful to help encourage their maturity. Offering them life experiences is a great way to help improve their knowledge of the world and also, learning is the best way to help your child become more independent and confident.

Therefore, here are some tips to help encourage the maturity of your children.

Open up about family experiences

Although you might think that hiding family experiences/troubles with your child could harm their emotional side, it can, in fact, help them mature.

The more you share, the more they can understand and feel that they are told the truth.

For example, your family might have recently experienced the loss of a loved one. In which case, you should tell them what happened and maybe take them along to the planning of the funeral. Asking them to get involved with the Caskets choosing or picking out flowers can help them mentally prepare for the event and in which case, can also help them feel more comfortable with similar future occurrences.

The more you share with your child, the more open they might become with you. Hence, it will build a better relationship and help them understand the ins and outs of life more, which will enhance their maturity.

Teach basic manners

Every child needs to be taught manners as otherwise, they won’t have many. Teaching them manners such as saying “please” and “thank you” can simply be a matter of practice when they ask for something or you do something for them.

Ensuring that they say please and thank you before you give them something will put the words into practice and encourage them to use the manners with other people.

You could practice teaching basic manners when you are out and about. You could ensure that your child orders their own food and isn’t allowed it until they say please and thank you to the staff. Doing so will help them become more confident using manners and encourage them to use them more often.

Model good behavior

Children often mimic those that they are around a lot. Hence, it is important to be a model of good behavior.

For instance, saying thank you to people is an effective way to encourage them to say thank you more.

Likewise, being calm and polite to people in restaurants will instill this behavior into them. The more you model good behavior and act in a way that you want your children to act, the more they will mimic your attitude.

Teach social skills with games

It is often most effective to teach children through games, as they love to play.

Hence, it can prove effective to teach social skills through games and fun activities. A great example is setting up a shop in your home. You could purchase or create your own shopping setup, which could be a fun way for your child to practice being the shop assistant or the customer.

You could recreate this practice with other games and setups, to further enhance the social skills of your children.

Having great social skills will enhance the confidence of your children and also, prove to be effective in helping them aid and sustain a great conversation.

Teach your children about personal space

Some children are not aware of giving people personal space, simply because they want to play and be near people. However, as they grow up, it is important that they are aware of the importance of social/personal space and how to give it.

Hence, when you are out and about, you could show your children how to give personal space and if they avoid doing so, tell them to move and act accordingly. Modeling personal space will likely encourage them to do the same and hence, will help them mature and understand how and why to offer personal space.

Personal space goes for inside the home too. It could involve giving friends and family personal space, which everyone needs from time to time. If you don’t teach a lesson about personal space, then the child could fear and worry when someone asks for space (although the personal space isn’t needed because of them). Therefore, teaching them about personal space will help them acknowledge the benefits, why people need it, and also learn that it is beneficial for them too.

Practice tone

Practicing your tone is a lesson that you probably remember. Not only are children taught it throughout school, but they are also taught it by parents. Screaming and shouting never gets anyone anywhere, nor does being rude. Therefore, it is important to teach your children about the tone of voice as early as possible. It will keep them out of trouble and also help them get across their opinion without coming across the wrong way.

You could practice tone at home in general conversation and also politely and calmly correct them when they are out and having conversations with other people.

Practicing tone often will ensure that they can maintain a positive and efficient tone, which will help them mature socially.

Help them open up emotionally

Some children are unaware of the benefits of opening up emotionally. Hence, it is important to give them a lesson as it will help them to mature.

Being able to open up and talk about emotions is something to fear, it is a way to feel more positive and seek advice.

You could put this into practice by opening up about your emotions and in return, asking them about their emotions. It might take them some time to fully open up and come to terms with the process. Yet, in time it will encourage them to talk about their issues and seek advice, which will improve their maturity and overall quality of life and relationships.

The more you put these lessons into practice, the more understanding your child will become. They will learn the benefits of having great social skills and also acknowledge how to become maturer much quicker. Being mature will help in life and improve confidence.
