Introducing Office Yoga!

September 15, 2016

I’m 29 years old and since the age of 18, I’ve worked in an office. What started out as what I thought would be a ‘temporary’ job, turned into a career and now 11 years later, I’m still working for the same company.

My office has moved a number of times over the years, but I remain firmly seated for the majority of my working day. When I came across an article in the Telegraph entitled, ‘Office Workers must exercise for an hour a day to counter death risk‘ I was intrigued by the findings.

I’m not the most active of people, although today I did have my first ever personal training session in a bid to be more active and lead a healthier lifestyle, but when I read that research on more than one million adults found that sitting for at least eight hours a day could increase the risk of premature death by up to 60 per cent, I was surprised.

According to scientists sedentary lifestyles are now posing a great threat to public health as smoking, and were causing more deaths than obesity. As such they’re urging anyone spending hours at their desk to change their daily routine by taking a five minute break every hour, as well as exercise at lunchtimes and evenings.

Five minutes may not seem like a long time, but it can be the start you need to a more active day and lifestyle.

Furniture Work have started up a campaign known as #OfficeYoga. They’re keen to raise awareness of the importance of movement at work. They’ve created this infographic showcasing different yoga moves and stretches you can do, without even leaving your office desk. Perfect for that quick five minute break!

They’ve also created this fun video which is worth a watch!

They’ve teamed up with a yoga teacher and two novices to make a short film depicting how yoga can (and can’t!) be incorporated into your daily office schedule. I’ll be sharing this with you on this post as soon as it’s available, but in the meantime why not give a Chair Cat Cow Stretch or a Chair Spinal Twist a go?

When I return to work on Monday, I know I’ll be giving it a go! I’ve always fancied trying yoga so this is a good way to start!

Did you know that yoga is over 5,000 years old! It’s practised by millions of people all over the world. It can help to combat sickness and injuries common in the modern workplace! Why not give it a go and see for yourself!
