Quite often I hear people saying that it’s funny how things change when you become a parent.
Pre-children I spent my Sundays lazing on the sofa, cuddling up to my husband and watching TV in between naps.
Nowadays Sundays are usually spent painting, crafting, playing in the park, running around at a soft play centre or pretty much anything else come to think of it that means I’m on my feet pretty much all day!
Not that I’m complaining. I wouldn’t change it for the world.
One thing I have noticed though since becoming a mum is that I’ve developed some ‘obsessions’. I’m sharing them hear with you to see if I’m not the only one!
1. Checking the weather. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is. Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter, this obsession is an all year round one! At the beginning of every week I’ll check the weather forecast so that I can plan our weeks activities. I sometimes find myself checking the forecast every few hours to see if it’s changed and when the forecast is wrong, I’m not a happy bunny!
2. Checking the doors are locked and the hob is off. Something I’d never done before in my life until I had children. I check the conservatory door – even though I know it’s locked because I haven’t opened it that day. I also check the kitchen door is locked, the front door and the porch door. Quite often after putting the girls in the car, I’ll run back to check once more! Before leaving the house I have to check that the hob is off – mainly because on one occasion I left a cardboard box on top of the hob and smelt burning a short while later. I’d accidentally turned the hob on when I put the box on top of it and it was black, charred and smoking. Oops!
3. Hoovering. Something my husband had always done, but I find myself hoovering more and more. If the girls have eaten cake or biscuits in our living room, I’ll hoover up straight away. Then after lunch, I’ll hoover again if they’ve got more crumbs on the carpet. I don’t know why I don’t leave it until the end of the day and just do it the once! I’d save myself a lot of time and effort!
4. Keeping puzzle pieces together and figures in their right houses. Who’d have known I’d be one of those mums frantically picking up puzzle pieces after our girls had played with them, just so that we don’t lose any! The one that bugs me the most though is keeping those little figures in their right homes. The treehouse people have to go back in the treehouse. The boot people have to go back in the boot. The princesses back in their castles and towers. I’m sure my husband mixes up them on purpose just to make me break into a sweat!
5. Baking. An odd one I know, but it’s a great way pass the time and teach my girls about where eggs come from, why we sift flour and the difference between caster sugar and icing sugar! I enjoy baking, always have done, but since becoming a mum it’s something I’ve done a lot more of.
Have you developed any strange obsessions since becoming a parent?

My hubby is obsessed with checking doors are locked and I'm obsessed with keeping them shut to "keep the heat in!" 🙂 I'm also obsessed with checking Zs hair repeatedly.

Hi Tas, thanks for your comment. Ah my parents always used to tell me off for leaving doors open as it let the heat out!!

I am totally the weather – I check it first thing every morning so I know how to dress the kids and can plan what we might do that day! I also hoover all the time, especially since I've found Shake n Vac in my local Aldi! My second is just crawling so I'm constantly wary of him collecting germs from the floor!

I am afraid I wasn't as diligent about the hoovering as you – I once caught my toddler eating a woodlouse that he had picked up off the living room floor. He had assumed it was a raisin as there were always so many raisins dropped on the floor and not hovered up! Yuk!

Hi Anita, thanks for your comment. Ew a woodlouse! I'm glad I ate my tea before I read that!

Yes!!!! I do all of these….especially the weather checking and the "collecting toy bits and keeping them together"! I do think it shows signs of an organised Mummy though! 🙂

Hi Jess, thanks for your comment. It's funny what we do as parents to keep our kids entertained isn't it!

We do some of these – weather checking, doors and windows – but not others. Hoovering is dangerous to Lego and there's always some where it shouldn't be! #myfavouritepost

Hi Mrs Tubbs, thanks for your comment. Ah yes Lego! Pet hate of mine for finding the tiny pieces everywhere! Love playing with it though!

I have zip lock bags for jigsaw puzzle pieces and fiddly games. It makes me insane when bits go missing + saves on having loads of bashed up jigsaw boxes taking up lots of space.

Hi Sarah, thanks for your comment. A ziplock bag is a brilliant idea!

Definitely a weather checker here 🙂
Being a mummy makes me so much more organised about meal time as well – when it was just me, I'd graze and eat when I felt like it. Kids make it that little more of an organised mission, with lots of meal planning required!

I do check the weather a lot, especially over the summer. I like to be organised, but have struggled with this as children create chaos!
