Find alternative means to cook

The biggest change to your life while the renovations are underway is going to be the means to eat. You won’t be able to have much access to cooking facilities, and you may be struggling to reach your fridge as well. You could opt to use a slow cooker to cook your meals in, freeze meals in advance and microwave them when needed, or look to eat out on some days. It will be a struggle, but it can be done!

Pack away everything before the renovators arrive

Consider keeping some of your packed items in a storage facility away from the renovations completely.

You’d be surprised by how many people can leave this step until the last minute! Have a day of putting things in boxes that you can live without for a few weeks, and keep a smaller box for things you’ll need to cook with like spices and sauces. Label your boxes appropriately and keep them in an accessible place.

Move essentials into a mini fridge for things like milk and butter, or move the fridge entirely out of the kitchen for frequent use.

Cordon off areas where pets and children can’t go

When the work is underway your pets or children won’t be able to run around in the kitchen like they used to. Teach them that they now can’t enter that area for a few weeks, as it’ll be full of dangers and hazards that can cause harm. 

For the most part your child may be in school or nursery, which means they’re only going to see the work being done when they return home. For pets, keep them to specific areas of the home as they may become startled by loud noises and movements.
