Being a parent is such an amazing gift. It really is.
Raising a baby well so that they become a kind-hearted, independent, strong adult is certainly challenging, yet I like to think it’s something all parents strive for when teaching their children.
This stems down to so many things. They way in which you interact with your children is teaching them how to behave. If you treat your child with respect, listen to them and take their feelings on board so that they know their opinion is valued, this is something that they’ll hopefully go on to do when they meet new people and then they can raise their children this way too. Part of this can also be found within their education. If they are encouraged to open up and share at child care and then at school, it can make such a positive difference in how they view themselves.

If you ignore your child or dismiss them and their opinions they’ll grow up to believe that they’re not important, that their opinion doesn’t matter and that they’re not good enough.
The way in which you act in front of your children, even when you think they’re not looking is also important. Children base a lot of what they learn when it comes to their own relationships with friends and siblings etc from what they see their mum and dad doing. After all you’re their role models. They look up to you for guidance. It’s so important that you guide them the right way in life and that they know they can talk to you about anything at any point in their lives without feeling judged.
One of the biggest I always tell myself is to never make my children feel silly. I have lovely memories of my childhood, but it’s marred by a few memories of times when I was made to feel silly, insignificant even, and it’s made me vow to never make my children feel that way.
I want to raise strong, intelligent, opinionated and independent women. In order to do that I need to be that role model.
I’ve learnt a lot about myself since turning 30. I’ve learnt that I can do anything I put my mind to, that I shouldn’t care about other people’s opinions of me because as long as I’m happy with myself that’s all that matters.
