Reunited over Pasta! The Trouble with Twins!

March 23, 2017

What happened to my gentle, happy, kind hearted girls?

One day they were four years old. They were nice to one another, had the occasional tantrum and more often than not they would listen to their mummy and daddy without us having to raise our voices.

Then, all of a sudden they turned five years old and it’s like something within them has changed.

Every day they argue, fight, cry and tell tales on one another.

R is definitely more dominant and hates it when she’s proven wrong. She hates it when M tells on her for doing something wrong, but she’s so defiant and stubborn that she can’t accept her wrong doing.

M is turning into a diva and if she can’t get her own way, all hell breaks loose. She’ll hang her head, stare at the floor with her arms folded across her belly and cry. Either that or she’ll storm out of the room and cry. She’ll huff and puff, and may even drop to the floor in tears.

I know they’re only five years old. I know they’re still very much learning about the world and their place in it. I know they’re still learning about how to deal with their emotions and I don’t expect them to be completely rational. What I would like is to find a way to prevent the daily battle that is making them so argumentative.

I just want them to be happy and nice to one another.

I’ve had numerous conversations with them and I find myself quoting the same thing to them day in, day out.

‘It’s nice to be nice. It’s bad to be bad’.

‘Treat others how you want to be treated. If you’re nice to others, they’ll be nice to you, but if you’re not nice to others, then you can’t expect others to be nice to you’.

Having said that I don’t want them to be pushovers either. If someone behaves badly towards them, they know to use their ‘big voices’ to say ‘No’ and to find a grown up who can help, but what about when they behave this way to one another?

From the moment they wake up until they moment they go to bed, they’re constantly at one another throats. However, I did manage to find some respite one day.

Straight after school, I asked if they’d like to help me make dinner. For those blissful ten minutes they were nice to one another. They sat next to each other putting the pasta in the saucepan, mixing it with spoons and pouring milk and water in a jug for me.

They took turns to press the buttons on the microwave to warm up the cheesy sauce and then they sat down to eat and from the kitchen I could hear:

“Muuuummmmm! M’s not eating her food!”

“Yes, I am!” M shouted back.

Ah well. I did enjoy those peaceful ten minutes.

I’m sure it’s just a phase like the terrible twos. God, I thought that was bad, but when you’re living in the moment, it’s tough. I feel like all I do some days is shout at them, and I don’t want to be a shouty mum!

Just this morning we were having a great time dancing and singing to some of the soundtracks from Disney’s Moana, then five minutes later, I ask them both to put their shoes on ready for school, and M, says she doesn’t want to wear her cardigan or coat, just her denim jacket.

I know this was because I’d opted for my denim jacket instead of my coat, but I explained she wouldn’t be allowed to wear her denim jacket to school and she had to wear her cardigan because it’s cold out, but if she wanted to take it off in the classroom if she got too hot, then that’s ok. This wasn’t good enough though.

I said that she could wear her blue coat as it’s not as heavy as her winter coat, but that she’d still need to wear her cardigan underneath. Still wasn’t good enough.

After 10 minutes of going back and for, I cracked. I shouted. We were going to be late for school and I’d had enough! I raised my voice, M cried and I felt awful.

Did she wear her cardigan to school? No. She put it in her backpack in case she wanted it.

Why do we always feel so bad for shouting at our children when clearly we’re justified in doing so sometimes? I guess it’s because our children just don’t understand that sometimes their behaviour isn’t justified. They can’t reason with us at this tender age and all they see is their mummy shouting for no reason.

I just keep telling myself, ‘this too shall pass’. Until then, well, I’ll just try to be more patient!

Emily, it’s not just twins that can behave this way! My two can sometimes. When we get tale-telling about “Helen looked at me weirdly” I sometimes want to say: “Nobody likes a grass”……but that would go over their heads.

They’ve just started school. It’s a big change. It’ll pass.

As for shouting, yes, it can make you feel guilty. Then again, your comments got me thinking about the time I saw a mum scream at the top of her voice at a child (not her own) outside my daughter’s school. The kid was about to walk out into traffic. She apologised profusely after doing it, but was she wrong? I say not. Depends when, what and how you’re shouting and when you get it wrong, as we all do, say sorry. I don’t envy you having twins and glsd I have a big age gap which avoids the arguments!! I’m sure it’s a phase though and it will pass. Thanks for hosting #thatfridaylinky

Ah it’s all so natural, but yes i completely get your frustrations! I hate it when i raise my voice to my son, i wouldn’t do it to an adult at work or my partner, so why my child? It’s a funny one. The twins will probably be bickering and loving each other til they’re in their 30s 😉

It’s so difficult to keep your calm when kids bicker at each other. Hope the phase soon passes. Sounds like you’ll be eating a lot of pasta for a while 🙂

ah yes, I think I’ve lived my life with the mantra ‘it’s just a phase’ but generally it is. We have to take our comfort in those odd times when everything is going smoothly, like with your pasta making.

We’re here with my Eldest son. He’s big on telling tales on his younger brother at them moment – “He did this” and “He didn’t do that”. I lost count of the times I said “I can see that, it’s not nice to tell tales just to get someone in trouble”. His response? “I’m not telling tales. I’m telling the TRUTH!” – he got me there! #thatfridaylinky

Oh I hope this is a phase as I know your girls used to be the best of friends. Perhaps they are just asserting themselves a little more. I have to bargain with the gremlin a lot too…hate it when I have to shout! xx Thanks for hosting x

Hopefully this phase passes quickly for you! I know what you mean about feeling guilty for shouting, but try to remember that you are educating your children. If we don’t give them boundaries, expectations of their behaviour and model what’s right/wrong then they would struggle in later life. #ThatFridayLinky

Even at almost three my twins are best of friends…until they turn on eachother and bite!

My nine and six year old too are bffs…and worst of enemies.

I didnt grow up with sisters so this is crazy weird to me.

I have 3 sons, plus a step son and without wishing to sound big headed, they mostly got on well together, from what I have heard from friends and family, boys are much easier than girls, my sister, who has one of each, tels me that I am blessed by only having sons! #diydaddy blog @-karendennis

Patience…. the holy grail of parenting, lol. My youngest are 18 months apart and sometimes I wish I could keep them permanently in separate areas of the house. They can’t be separated but somehow they can’t get along either half the time!

Oh no, I remember me and my sister (3 years apart) fighting so badly when we were younger and now we are so close! Hopefully its just a phase for you. My 3yr old is an only child and I swear starts a fight with herself every single day, she drives me up the wall! 🙂

Ahh I can relate to this. Although my girls are not twins, they are as good as, and I feel like all I did is referee these days! One minute they are best friends, the next they are tearing eachothers hair out! It’s hard work! I love that they played together with the pasta, that’s so funny, kids always love the most random things! #thatfridaylinky

At least they could unite over the pasta! As for the parental shouting, we all get frustrated from time to time. I get the impression your girls have two pretty compassionate and caring parents! #ThatFridayLinky

Hold on to the fact that they will always be each others best friends. I have a 6 and 4-year-old and that is what they are like. You would think that they were twins some day. The problem with “this too shall pass” is that the good passes too. Good luck! #ThatFridayLinky

My daughter is only 15 months at the moment, and while I don’t raise my voice at her, I do occasionally raise it out of frustration, more at myself than anything else. I always feel bad afterwards, mainly because I feel as though I can’t understand her position. It just frustrates me.

It’s tough isn’t it. Our two, although much younger, are similar in age so we’re already experiencing fights. And it is tough not to shout sometimes.
