School Cooking

July 13, 2015
It’s been quite a while since I was actually in school so I’m not sure how much things have changed since then, but the only thing I was ever taught to make was fruit salad and semolina!
I love cooking and baking. I think it’s an important part of our daily lives and I’ll always try to get my three year old twins involved too.

I always remember watching my mum cook when I was younger. Whether it was a cake, her tasty homemade toffee or a more nutritious meal, I always enjoyed watching her and helping.

My twins really do love to help out. Especially if we make cake because it means they get to eat it afterwards! They love helping to weigh all of the ingredients, but most of all they love cracking the eggs! They’re really good at it!
If I cook a chicken dinner our twins will help by ‘snapping’ the broccoli! They share the broccoli and take it in turns to snap bits off to put into the saucepan!
I actually think that when children help to cook a meal, they’re more inclined to eat it. What do you think?
I’m not sure why my school was useless on the home cooking front, but I aim to ensure that my girls know how to cook a variety of meals. Not so that they can serve their husbands up a delicious meal at the end of a hard working day, but so that they can learn about a good, balanced diet and about what foods are good for them. I’d do the same thing if I had boys!
I’ve never really understood why schools aren’t more pro-active in teaching children nutrition and showing them how to make different meals, as well as different cooking techniques. I mean it’s a pretty important part of life so it should be taught and taught well for that matter!
I’m by no means an amazing chef, but I know how to cook a good variety of meals and I think it’s important that my children do too.
What do you think? What was your school like when it came to cooking?
