Sewing Project: Super King Size Quilt. Part 1.

July 12, 2016

I love sewing. It’s something I really enjoy. I love the whole process of deciding what to make, choosing the fabrics I’ll use and the actual creative process.

Quilting isn’t new to me. A good few years ago I made our twin girls a quilt each out of their old baby clothes. One is yet to be finished, but I promise I will finish it soon!
All of my sewing projects have been made using the fabulous John Lewis Mini Sewing Machine. It’s served me and still has plenty of life left in it. I’ll be keeping it for my smaller projects and for our girls when they’re a bit older as it’s a great starter machine.
However, I did recently purchase a new sewing machine. A Singer Confidence sewing machine to be exact.

The reason I decided to buy a new machine was because I wanted to up my sewing game!
I wanted to make a superking size bed quilt and for that I knew a full size machine would make the job easier and quicker.
I decided to make a jelly roll quilt. Jelly rolls are basically rolls of fabric strips that are all different patterns and colours.

The first job was to cut each strip in varying sizes of between 2-10 inches.
I cut up a total of three jelly rolls worth of fabric and then laid them all out in the size of the quilt that I wanted to make (220cmx260cm).
However, I soon realised that I didn’t have enough fabric!

Note the gap between the top of where the quilt should start and the upper section!
So I ordered some more jelly rolls and then got to work!
I didn’t count how many separate strips of fabric there were in total, but I knew it was a lot!
The next job was stitch all of the strips together into one long line. To do this I placed one piece of fabric on top of the other so the right sides were both facing inwards and then I sewed them together.

That’s pretty much where I am at the moment! I still have a lot of strips to go, but I’m getting there slowly!
I’ll post another update soon!

You are so clever. I wish I had your sewing talents. I can't do anything like that. I've been living seeing all of your creation. Good luck with this one x
