Three Fun and Innovative Ideas for Decorating Your Home This Christmas

November 27, 2015
It doesn’t seem more than a moment ago that we were raising a toast to the New Year, wondering with a mingling of trepidation and excitement what the monthsahead would bring us. Now, the chill of winter is in the air once more. Christmas lights zigzag through the streets of town centres, and dazzle those who wander through the dusk-lit parks. Festive songs blare from every store, and the presents are starting to burst from their well-concealed hiding places.
All of this means one thing: it’s time to think about decorating your home. With December just around the corner, here are three innovative ideas to help you…
#1: Personalise Your Own Baubles
A beautifully coordinated Christmas tree is akin to a work of art, but for those of us with children, a slightly more slap shod end product is usually the result of their overzealous efforts. There is nothing that little ones love more than helping to decorate the tree, and allowing them to create their own baubles is an utter delight to them. Luckily, it’s also very simple. The best way to do it is to invest in some plain decorations, break out the paint and glue, and get your hands on glitter and Christmas confetti. Set up a worktable, cover it in newspaper, and unleash the tiny tots. When they’re done, hang their hard work somewhere safe to dry (a hanger suspended from a curtain rail usually works), give it a day or so, and then suspend it in pride of place from the branches of your tree.

#2: Create Fairy Light Bowls
Beautiful decorations don’t have to be expensive, and a nice twist on the traditional fairy light strings is fairy light bowls and vases. They’re as simple as they sound. All that they require is a pretty piece of translucent or transparent glassware, a string of lights, and a handy plug socket. For a really festive effect, place a pair of them to either side of a roaring fire, and let them illuminate those dark winter nights.
#3: Bake Gingerbread Decorations
Thirdly and finally, try your hand at baking some gingerbread decorations. The mixture is so simple to make, and it can be moulded into any shape that you desire, from stockings to Santa to candy canes. A little bit of icing will help the children to refine their masterpieces, and then all that’s left to do is punch in a hole (the tip of a pair of scissors will usually suffice), and thread it through with brightly coloured string or ribbon. Hang them alongside your personalised baubles and you’ll have a truly unique tree to help you celebrate the festive period.
