2016 Kitchen Trend Predictions

January 27, 2016

I often dream about how I would design a house of my own. For over ten years my husband and I have been renting, but I know that one day we will own our very own home.

I’m passionate about cooking so one of the most important rooms in a house for me has to be the kitchen. As it’s a place that I’m likely to spend a lot of time in, I’d like to ensure that it’s on trend.

Mayfair Granite, who specialise in kitchen worktops have compiled some of their predictions for what will be big during 2016.

Bold Appliances

I love my appliances and kitchen gadgets, but some people rarely move beyond standard coloured kitchen appliances, tending to go safe with either white, black or stainless steel. All of that is going to change this year, as people introduce colourful cabinets and sinks to their kitchens.

Bright, vibrant colours are bang on trend for 2016, allowing people to show off their individualism and their appliances in style.

I have to be honest and admit the majority of my appliances at the moment are white or stainless steel. My microwave is white, as is my bread maker. My slow cooker is stainless steel and my hob is black.

It would be nice to add a splash of colour and I think when we have our own home I would definitely do that. I’m not sure what colour yet. Nothing too out there, but something that’s noticeable and will last a while without looking outdated.

Colourful Sinks

To be honest I didn’t even know you could get a colourful sink! A colourful bowl perhaps, but a sink? Well, much like kitchen cabinets, sinks are trending away from basic white and stainless steel. The vibrant colours now coming onto the market are a great way of adding a splash of colour to a neutral kitchen or to create an eye-catching focal point that really gives a kitchen that wow factor.

I quite like idea of a purple kitchen, so a nice subtle lavender colour sink is quite appealing. I think purple on white looks lovely. It can give a room a nice fresh look and clean feel to it.

Large-format Flooring and Vinyl

I remember seeing a picture on Facebook not long ago of someone’s kitchen and I fell in love with the tiles she had on her kitchen floor. That’s something I never thought I’d say about someone’s kitchen floor, but it’s true!

Kitchen flooring is an important part of the kitchen design procedure which is often overlooked as people focus on cabinet design, appliances and lighting, but it can have a dramatic effect on the overall look of a kitchen.
Tiles have always been a popular choice for kitchen floors as they are hard wearing, easy to clean and available in a wide range of colours, and this year will be no exception. Mayfair Granite predicts that 2016 will see Large-Format tiles becoming even more popular; these larger tiles mean less grout lines leading to a much cleaner look, something that will be popular this year as sleek designs continue to be king.
Vinyl flooring has come a long way since the peel-and-stick stuff from the 1970s and will also be a popular choice this year. Luxury vinyl combines the high quality realistic look of hardwood or stone with the durability of vinyl making it a natural fit for the kitchen.
