Daytime Naps – Update

November 3, 2012

Twin daddy and I have come to the conclusion that our girls need to have a better daytime nap routine.

Since Tuesday of this week, instead of allowing our girls to have 3 half hour naps a day, we have managed to whittle this down to 2 naps, totaling 2 and a half hours.

Here is our new routine:

5am – Bottle
8am – Porridge
9am – 30 minute nap
10am – Toast, biscotti, fruit custard, water
12pm – Lunch
1230/1pm – 90 minute nap
3pm – Bottle
5pm – Tea
7pm – Bath, bottle, bed

How have we done this?

Well, after their lunch I put the girls down for a nap. They usually wake after 30 minutes and I used to assume this was because they had, had enough sleep, so I would get them out of their cots and bring them into the lounge to play.

Now, instead of doing this, when they wake up after 30 minutes I rock them back to sleep. This takes about 5 minutes but they then go on to sleep for a further hour.

Some days they sleep for an hour straight, and on a good day (like today) the full 90 minutes.

How do you cope with your twins day time naps? Please let us know in the comments below.

I think some babies are comfortable with a long lunchtime nap from very early on with just a short 9am nap. But it doesn't work for others until much later. I tried to introduce the big nap very early on and it was a big mistake. I ended up following what seemed littl'un's natural routine of 45 mins mid morning and afternoon which by about one merged into 2 hours at lunchtime.

I agree. Before now I would have never introduced a long lunch time nap because our girls wouldn't make it from 2/3pm until bedtime without another nap. Now that they are 8 months old (nearly 9 months) they seem happier to be awake for longer periods of time x
