Envy

November 22, 2017

Photos of families on Facebook.

Grandparents cuddling grandchildren.

Mums like me, arm in arm with their mums walking down the street, chatting about their day and what they’re going to cook for dinner.

Smiling, laughing, making memories.

I envy you.

Colleagues talking about their mums, their old bedrooms from when they were younger and reminiscing about times gone by.

I envy you.

Having lost mum many years ago, I can’t help but well up a little when I see other people with their mums, knowing that I’ll never have the chance to talk to mum again.

Working in people’s homes, I take a lot in. Especially when I see family photos hanging on the wall. Three generations smiling back at me. Grandma, mum and children.

A picture I’ll never have of my own.

Perhaps envy is the wrong word. I mean, when I see these pictures and hear those stories of the funny thing your mum did on the weekend, I smile. It must be lovely to grow up with a mum who can meet your children, watch you walk down the aisle and share recipes with you.

Sadly, my mum will never meet her grandchildren or see her children get married.

A few days ago, I was sent some unseen photographs of my mum, my sister and I from when we were younger. It was lovely seeing those photos and brought back wonderful memories of times I’d forgotten about.

I thought to myself, if I could go back to being a child again. To when mum was still alive, would I change anything?

The answer is yes, but only if I knew then what I know now.

I’d spend more time with her, be nicer to her and be more considerate and understanding.

Although mum passed away 12 years, grieving never gets any easier. It actually gets harder the older I get as the more time passes by since I last saw mum. The memories fade, but I’m thankful for the photographs to remind me.

I am so sorry for your loss and that you still feel it so very deeply but it does mean you loved someone a lot which is a great thing to have had in your life. You did your best just as she did. I think this is a brave and honest post.

It looks like you were all having great fun in that photo. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to lose a parent.

My heart aches for you. My mum is still alive but she disowned me when I married my hubby (my whole family did actually, including siblings, aunty, uncles etc). I miss her a lot even more so of late, as I’m pregnant again. I know our situations aren’t the same but I can relate to envying others, replaying memories and thinking about things in hindsight. Such a beautiful heartfelt post. #ThatFridayLinky

I’ve not lost anyone close to me, so I can’t really understand exactly what it does feel like.

I think though that once you hold that person in your heart they are there with you.

I’m sure you show the twins pictures and tell them what a wonderful person she was.

    A beautiful post Emily.

A tough read Emily. Your feelings come through very clearly. Quite understandable that you would feel this way. I can only imagine what it is like but hope the images you have give you some solace. Thanks for hosting #thatfridaylinky

I’m so sorry and they say time heals all but that’s not quite true, is it? We are forced to adjust to our new normal but sharing memories and pictures is the best way to keep their memories alive. ((hugs)) #thatfridaylinky

I am lucky that my parents are still alive despite both going through Cancer scares of their own and everyday I am pleased to still have their love and support. I am sorry you had to experience the loss of your mum so young but glad you have a wealth of lovely memories to draw upon. Old photos are the best for that, digital pics filed on the computer rob of us that. I am sure your mum would be mega proud of you Emily! #ThatFridayLinky

Oh Emily, this was so sad to read. I’m so sorry to hear you lost your mum. You yourself come across as a really good mum, and some of that may have been shaped by your own experiences, both your memories and the things you feel you’ve missed. It must have been so nice to see new photos, even if sounds like it was a bit bitter sweet.
