How to arrange wall art

July 12, 2021

Have you been starring at your bare walls for days, weeks or months and need to do something about them? I know how you feel. I’ve been thinking about what to do about my bare white walls for ages but I just couldn’t seem to come to a consensus. However, after a lot of pondering, that has now changed! I’ve decided to hang wall art all over my wall to give it some personality and colour and if you are reading this, I’m sure you are thinking the same!

You might have even bought the art you wanted on the wall, hung it and then not liked how it looked. Arranging wall art is really a form of art. It’s really not as simple as it looks, trust me. Of course, there is no perfect way to do it, it’s art. However, there are ways to help you achieve the look you want without too much hassle. And today, I’m here to help! For some extra tips, I’ve partnered up with UK fixings supplier, Speedy Fixings, who supply everything you need to hang up your wall art.

Consider the room.

It’s essential to think about the space you have as a whole. Think about the room, its layout and the wall space available. If you have a large wall, you wouldn’t just hang up a tiny painting in the middle, right? The same goes for a very large painting on a small wall. A small painting would look lost on a large wall whilst a large painting would make a small room feel overcrowded.

Dear Bear and Beany recommends adding art to the “forgotten spaces in your walls, including in between windows and doors. I think that’s a great idea! Not that many people think about hanging up art in these spaces but why not?

Pick the right art.

After figuring out how many pieces of wall art you are going to hang up plus, their sizes, it’s time to actually find the right art. This comes down to personal preference – it’s your wall, your choice! However, if you are thinking of doing a gallery wall and you have no clue how to do it, Studio DIY advises on picking a colour palette and sticking to it. In case you want to pair new art with wall art you already have, “try to repeat colors across your pieces 2-3 times to tie everything together” they recommend.

Think of the arrangement.

If you are working with multiple art pieces, you will have to consider the arrangement. Maybe you have various art pieces in different sizes and shapes? You will definitely need to think about the arrangement. As Me Him the Dog and a Baby says in a recent blog post, “The best way to go around doing so is by either displaying them on the floor and play around with placement or cutting cardboard shapes and taping them to the wall to have an idea of the final look.”

Get creative.

There is no set rule when it comes to arranging and hanging up wall art. You don’t even have to hang it on your wall – you can showcase it on floating shelves, hanging it on ceiling hooks… There are so many different ways you can display art, so get creative and have fun!
