How to Tackle Those Everyday Problems in Your Home

April 25, 2017

Every day homeowners all over the world have to face a host of everyday problems. It may not be the end of the world if they’re not sorted, but they’re annoying all the same — hence why they’re called problems. They may not be life threatening. They may not be all that important in the grand scheme of things. But they do need sorting out and tending to every day otherwise they’ll just continue to grow and grow. Below are a few of the most general problems homeowners face every day as well as a few ways to tackle them.

Have you ever been doing your weekly clean and noticed, to your horror, that there is a watermark ring on a table? If so then you can rest assured you’re not alone. This is a very small, yet very annoying problem faced in the home every day. What makes it even more of an annoyance is that you’ve probably told your kids (and the other half) to use a coaster about a thousand times! But fear not as there are ways to tackle this very annoying plight. You can use a number of common household appliances. You could combine a small amount of baking soda and a small amount of water to make a paste to gently rub into the spot. You could mix equal parts vinegar and olive oil and apply them to the wood that has been tainted by the watermarks. Or you could literally blow the marks away with hairdryer that is on full blast. And if you manage to spot a host of watermark rings dotted about your home after a party then again, fear not. By applying petroleum jelly to the spots there and then, leaving them overnight and then rubbing them off in the morning everything will be as good as new. In fact, the only thing that’ll be left to remind you of the night before will be your bad head!Similarly, bathtub rings are an everyday menace too. Unlike their watermark ring cousins brought about by drinks on tables, bathtub rings are unavoidable if the bathtub is used a lot. These rings develop over time in well used tubs, but they can be tackled. If you want to put the shine back in your tub then simply dip a half-cut lemon into salt and then scrub wherever you see a mark. With a bit of elbow grease the marks will be gone in no time. But this isn’t the only everyday problem that resides in the bath, blocked drains live there too. They are a nuisance. They can cause a real problem when you’re trying to get on with your everyday chores and necessities, such as washing up or washing yourself. If the sinks in your home, wherever in the bathroom or in the kitchen, are draining slow then you need to quicken up the process. You can do so by dropping Alka-Seltzer (yes, heartburn tablets) down the drain in question followed by a cup of white vinegar. You should then leave the two to do their job for at least 10 minutes before you pour boiling water down after them. This should dislodge the build-up that has caused the blockage and, voila, everything should be running smoothly again.

But this isn’t the only bad build-up that can cause a problem every day. A build-up of rubbish and garbage is another plight of everyday life that is a real problem. And if it isn’t sorted pronto then the problem will just continue to grow. As more and more rubbish is thrown onto an already huge pile it becomes unsightly and a bad smell. More importantly, it can become a serious health hazard for those that come into close contact with it. Because of this you should seek to have the situation sorted as soon as you know it has become a problem. As soon as you recognise it to be a major disturbance you should seek same-day rubbish removal. Whether it’s household, outdoor, renovation or commercial waste you should seek to have it taken as far away from you as possible by professionals. And another problem that can become a serious health hazard if left untended is a dusty air-vent. Anybody who suffers with their allergies in your home are being put in an uncomfortable, and sometimes dangerous, position if air-vents are left to fill themselves with dust. When doing your weekly clean make sure to check the air vents in your home for dust. And if you do happen to come across a vent that is riddled in it you should take action straight away. To reach those hard-to-reach areas try wrapping a cloth that has been saturated with a cleaning product around a knife. This way you’ll be able to clean out even the deepest and darkest crevices of your vent. To protect yourself in this process, especially if you have a serious allergy condition, make sure to wear a dust mask.

And there are a whole host of other common household problems that can be fixed in a jiffy. If your A/C unit has, of late, been dispelling a less than nice smell then place a dryer sheet on top of the filter. If your fridge has also not been smelling of roses then place newspapers in the fruit and veg drawers to absorb the smell. If you feel as if the sponges you use to clean with are riddled with germs then simply put them in the microwave. First soak the sponge in question in water, put it in the microwave on high for two minutes, leave it to cool down and then it’s ready to use. By using the things you already have in your home to fix any problems that arise in it you are saving money around the home, and that’s always a good thing, right?

So, the next time you’ve got a problem in your home make sure to use the resources you already have to fight it. And make sure to never let a problem grow too big. If you do, it just means more work when you come to tackle it.
