Identical or Not? Does it matter?
Ok, so I’m just going to write this as it sounds in my head! Arghhh! Oh my god! Seriously! Why? Does it matter?
*Takes an intake of breath*
Before I continue my rant post, I wanted to share with this piece of information with you:
Types of Twins
Fraternal, also known as non-identical and dizygotic
Identical, also known as monozygotic
For more information you may want to read this article.
Our twins are fraternal and you only have to look at them to realise that they aren’t identical. I don’t dress them the same for a number of reasons, but the two main reasons why I don’t are:
1. It totally creeps me out (think twins from The Shining – sends a shudder down my spine!)
2. They are individuals
Now, in my opinion some people are just thick and I’m not going to apologise for writing this! It really irritates me when people ask what the age gap is between our girls. Does it look like there is 9 months between them?
I used to answer this question by saying that they’re twins. Nowadays though, I answer this question simply by saying, 2 minutes. It confuses people and gives me a little joy when I look at the puzzled expressions on their faces as they try to work out the fact that they are indeed twins.
Why do people also say: “Oh, they don’t look like twins?”
I didn’t realise that all twins must look alike! I mean come on people! Twins are twins regardless of whether they look alike or not! I don’t care if you want to dress your twins the same and I won’t cast any judgement on those who do, but when I hear about people saying that they want a DNA test to find out if their twins are identical or not it annoys me!
First of all, if it annoys you when people constantly say you’re non-identical twins look identical…STOP dressing them the same!
Secondly, does it really matter? Will you treat them any differently?

Totally agree with you there: I find identically-dressed twins creepy too, & it must detract from their having individual identities. I suspect it may just be thoughtlessness more than anything else – twofer offers on clothes maybe?
The one that gets me is when we're asked about our twins, who are clearly a boy & a girl, if they're identical! I'm very tempted to say, "No, one of them has a willy" but I (usually) don't!
