Nursery – Day Five
The girls weren’t as excited about going to nursery today as they were yesterday, but I kind of expected that.
After the weekend break they woke up refreshed and feeling happy and ready for nursery yesterday. I predicted that as the week progresses the girls would get less and less keen about nursery. Mainly because they’ll soon realise that they’re going every day so the novelty will wear off.
This morning they didn’t seem too bothered about going, but when the time came to put their shoes and coats on that’s when they both started to get a bit quiet and teary.
They both said they didn’t want to go, but I have found that distraction techniques seem to work well. We talked a lot about the weather and also about their friend whose second day it is today. We also strapped their toys into their car seats so that they could wait for the girls to return.
When we got to the nursery we were around 10 minutes early, but the girls enjoyed watching the older children in one of the other playgrounds.
When their teacher opened up the doors, they went in with me, hung up their bags and coats and then I took them into the main room. I gave them a kiss and cuddle before they wandered over to their teacher. They didn’t even look back at me!
I looked back a few times as I left the room to make sure they were ok and they seemed pretty content.
When I picked them up, R had a rather blue face! She’d obviously been drawing with chalk! They both seemed a little quiet and almost somber when they came out. They had a few pieces of paper each with their drawings on.
When we got home they both lay on the sofa under a blanket and watched TV. They were so quiet. I asked them questions about nursery, but they weren’t very forthcoming. I put it down to tiredness, but I rang the nursery for a bit of reassurance to make sure they’d been ok today.
The teacher said they’d been good, they did lots of drawings and were settling in well so that was good to hear.
Yesterday the nursery gave us some ‘homework’ to do so I thought today would be a good day to do that as it’ll be a nice distraction in the morning to encourage them to go.
They’re creating a display board about Goldilocks and the Three Bears so each child was given a cardboard square and asked to decorate it.
I raided our craft box and found some buttons, feathers, foam shapes and tissue paper.
I also gave R some blue paint and M some red paint.
They painted their squares and then we set them aside to dry.
Whilst they were drying I drew Goldilocks and the Three Bears for the girls to colour in. They decided to give Goldilocks some googly eyes!
They then painted on some PVA glue to their painted cardboard squares and stuck on some of the crafty bits I’d found.
They both really enjoyed doing this activity and I think they did a really good job for their first piece of homework!

Very impressive. Better than probably N would do and he's at school now. Hope they get settled into their routine at nursery soon. There's always a bit of a shock realising it's every day.

Aw that looks like a great activity! I'm a reception teacher and it's always a bit of a shock for the children when they realise they have to keep coming back time and time again! They are lucky in that they have each other there – they have someone from home to help settle them (even if that someone feels as nervous as them!) – the familiarity of home will hopefully help them settle really quickly! Thanks for hosting #binkylinky

Hi Becky, thanks for your comment. It really was a great activity. It must be a big shock to them. They're so used to being at home every day and then all of a sudden they have to go to nursery school every day. Thankfully my husband and I talked to our girls about nursery school a lot so they were quite prepared and today they both went in with no problems at all which was great x

I love their little Goldilocks projects. So sweet. It sounds like they are starting to settle a little more. It must be very overwhelming for children to suddenly have to go to nursery/school. I found it really hard too – but have always just about managed to hold it together for my children's sake! x

Great art work! They've done so well, a is just not into colouring, he would rather just scribble all over anything! A great way to decorate! Glad the girls are enjoying nursery now! 🙂 x

Hi Jenny, thanks for your comment. They did do well. R surprised me how well she coloured in, but she has a good level of concentration whereas M gets bored quickly! x
