Spoon Guru

Spoon Guru App Review

October 8, 2016

If you’ve been reading my blog lately then you may be aware that I’m now into my fourth week with a personal trainer. One of the biggest changes for me isn’t the exercise side of things, but the food side.

I don’t have a great track record with food. I love takeaways, chocolate, crisps and sugary drinks, but I also have a nut allergy. Now that I’m on a mission to get fit and healthy, it’s pretty obvious that my eating habits need to change.

With some guidance from my personal trainer, I’ve been looking into what I should be eating. That’s where a new app called Spoon Guru comes into play.

Spoon Guru
Spoon Guru is an app for those with food allergies, intolerances, dietary requirements or those just trying to monitor their food, like me.
Essentially the app lets your create your own profile which means you can enter some information about what food you want to exclude, along with any dietary or lifestyle requirements.

There’s also a super cool barcode feature which allows you to scan your food. The app will then tell you if it’s a good choice depending on your requirements, making shopping much simpler.

I took the app on a recent shopping trip with me. This was after selecting some exclusions such as nut free, low sugar and organic. It was really interesting to see the results of some of the food that I scanned. Things that I’d normally eat, came up with a warning message, but I’ve also learnt about what I can eat based on my requirements.

Spoon Guru
Spoon Guru also offers a choice of ingredients, products and recipes for those living with multiple allergies, food intolerances or unique dietary preferences. For example if you can’t eat dairy or you follow a specific diet e.g. vegan, paleo, nut-free, shellfish-free, low sugar, or organic diet etc. Simply tap to create a personal food profile by setting preferences against a list of more than 20 food intolerances and lifestyle diets.

There are five options available on the app once you’ve created your profile:

Inspire Me – List of recipes

Search – Search recipes

Scan – Barcode Scanner

Favourites – A great place to store your favourite recipes so you can easily find them again

Profile – Allows you to choose you food intolerances and Lifestyle Diets

As part of this review I decided to make the broccoli salad recipe. The recipe is for six people so I did reduce some of the ingredients to make it for one.

There was a handy list of ingredients and the method was super easy to follow. In hindsight I think should I have reduced the amount of mustard powder I used, as this was a pretty spicy salad, but I did enjoy it!

Spoon Guru
I’ve put together a short video to show you the app which you can view below.

Overall, I think this is a great app. It’s really easy to use and it’s also really useful. The app is completely free and available on the app store and on android.

This app looks like something I need in life! I love your video, too – it’s always great to see visuals like YouTube videos as well as blog posts, especially since I know of people who like the idea of blogging but are dyslexic so reading is hard for them – I’m going to send the video to a friend of mine who’s really into apps like this so he can watch it 🙂 Great post! x

This looks great! I never know what amounts of different things I should be eating, and we have friends who have all kinds of food intolerences and I think this app could work for that too possibly? I am going to have a look at downloading this! Thank you x
