To invite the whole class or not? Birthday Party Dilemma!

January 26, 2016

R and M, our twin girls started nursery in September.

They were just over three and a half years old and thankfully have settled in well. They’re soon to be four years old and this has left me wondering what to do about the girls birthday.
Not long after starting nursery the girls and the rest of their class were invited to a joint birthday party. There’s another set of twins in their class and they were having a joint birthday party with their cousin. They’d invited the entire class.

I kind of assumed this was the norm as it certainly was when I was a child. I actually remember a few of my birthday parties when I was a kid and always remember the amount of presents my sister and I had in return. I thought it was great! Now that I’m a mum, I’m not so sure! For starters I don’t even have enough room in my home for that many toys!
Anyway, I’d decided to do a bit of research into venues and entertainment for our girls birthday party, when I recently found out that one of the mums is having a small party for her daughters birthday, but she’s only inviting a few of the children.
I don’t have a problem with this at all, but it’s left me wondering what I should do for our girls. The cost of a party for the entire class is the same as it would be for a select few, as I’d just be paying for rom hire which is pretty cheap. However the thought of all those presents scares me!
I think R and M would like a party. They loved me the one they went too, but I’m just not sure how to go about it!
What do you think? What would you do?

Hi 🙂 my two sons ages 10 And 5 have both recently had parties in a village hall and just invited everybody but they are both at school. Last year when little man was at preschool we just had a few as he and I didn't even know everyone and had different children each day he was there. Also the amount of children would have overwhelmed him!! The presents arent so overwhelming really. We have a very small house and lots were craft things and sweets! Or you could suggest books or colouring stuff.

oh we have this issue. Last year I told Sylvia 10 kids only and she chose 10 but there were others int he class who felt sad and felt they were missing out! I have to plan a party in May and if its bowling then it will be expensive so will have to make a limit there too! If it was at home, it may be cheaper and then we could have more but then..we would need more space. Interesting post. Angela #PBloggers

I know my brother and his wife have had this dilemma. It's such a hard choice to make. Would the twins be happy to pick a few friends or do you think they'd rather have them all. I guess the other thing is would they then want the rest of the parties the same and I guess whole class parties could then get expensive.

If you are hiring a large hall I'd invite the entire class however I've always done smaller groups usually 10-15 and gone to places like soft play centres. These charge per child so I'd never be able to afford the whole class. As a general rule hall parties entire class other venues child's best friends. This seems to be the theme at my children's school. Of course everyone is different & there's no right or wrong.

I'm in a similar boat with Little P! I was hoping someone else in her class would have a birthday first but most of her class are summer term babies, so she's one of the oldest. I don't want to set the bar either way!

If I invite all of Joshs friends outside of nursery (who have to come as we are all really close) and the entire nursery there would be around 80 kids and I wouldn't cope!!! But I can't just invite some of the class I would feel to guilty! Nigel said he wishes he could chuck invites in the air and whoever caught them could come!! Lol. As long as Josh comes to the girls party I think he would sulk if he didnt ha ha ha xxxx
