What is The Best Bed for a Small Kid’s Bedroom?

January 12, 2023

Children usually get the short end of the stick with bedroom size so that adults have more space. Kids don’t realise it and love their small bedrooms, but it takes little time for toys, clothes, and clutter to take over.

If that sounds familiar, you can use space more cleverly with perfect-fit furniture and storage. Buying a storage bed, or choosing bunk beds for two children, are solid ways to make the most of a small kid’s bedroom.

This article explores the best beds for small children’s bedrooms, with additional tips to maximise space and keep things tidy.

Let’s jump in!

The best beds for small kid’s bedrooms

Mid sleepers

Mid-sleeper beds (also known as cabin beds) are full-size single beds with built-in shelves and cubbies for books, soft toys, and other bits and bats. They help de-clutter bedrooms while looking fantastic, with various styles available for boys and girls.

For example, the Julian Bowen Stella is available in blue or pink, or for older children, you might prefer the Julian Bown Roxy in white or grey.

Mid-sleepers are suitable for children from age six, although anything higher than 4ft off the ground is only suitable for children over eight.

High sleepers

High sleepers are single beds on stilts, usually with a built-in desk below the bunk and sometimes shelves, drawers, and pull-out wardrobes.

The Julian Bowen Pegasus (available in black or white) is a fantastic option if you need a complete bed, wardrobe, and drawer solution. For gamers, the Nebula Gaming Bed is an excellent space-saving high-sleeper.

You can also get novelty high sleepers like the Birlea Safari, which has two bunks with the top bunk mimicking a treehouse.

Bunk beds

Bunk beds are the best solution for sleeping two or three children in one bed. They have either two single bunks or one top single and one small double bottom bunk, giving you lots of flexibility to sleep a few kids.

Sleeping two kids is easy with bunk beds like the Julian Bowen CamdenBirlea CorfuSerene Oslo, and the classic Mya Pine Bunk Bed.

Beds with an extra guest

If you want your child to have a standard single bed and a solution for sleepovers, check out our range of beds with an extra guest bed.

Beds with an extra guest bed, like the Birlea Verona, have a pull-out trundle to accommodate a second single mattress, letting you sleep two children in one bedroom.

Alternatively, the Giltedge Beds Buckingham is a standard single bed with a pull-out bed, turning the single bed into a spacious bed for sleepovers.

Ottoman beds

Single ottoman beds are the perfect bed for children over ten because the entire underside of the mattress is storage space. The base is held open by hydraulic struts, and you can get a side or end-opening ottoman to suit every layout.

Prices for single ottomans start from £249, and you can get some seriously well-made beds for that price, such as the Urban Beds Fusion.

However, you need to know that ottomans are dangerous for children under ten due to the risk of the base slamming shut with force.

Summing up

Here’s a summary of the beds listed in our article:

  • Mid-sleepers give you shelves and cubbies without taking up more space than a standard single.
  • High sleepers give you a desk, drawers, and even a wardrobe under the top bunk.
  • Bunk beds sleep two, three or four people without taking up more space than a standard single bed (other than height).
  • Beds with an extra guest bed are great for sleepovers.
  • Ottomans are the best storage beds for small bedrooms.
